This site was launched in
November 2000 as a community resource for the village of Helmdon,
Northamptonshire, England.
Since its launch the site has grown considerably and is constantly
being added to and updated. Much of the content is written and/or
collected by Audrey Forgham,
with the design work carried out by Danny
Moody. However, the web site has dozens of contributors throughout
the village and beyond; there are those who contribute photos or memories
for our history section, there is a band of willing typists who transcribe
anything not already in electronic format, and there are representatives
from each of the village organisations who contribute information
on events and activities as well as submitting their programme and
committee details. All in all, this web site has become a community-wide
resource and is kept vibrant and lively through the co-ordination
of a few, but the input of many.
The site has been constantly developed and improved throughout its
life since the webmaster had no previous knowledge of web design or
HTML programming at the start. The site's features and functions have
grown along with the knowledge of the designer and now there are many
useful utilities such as a search engine, a message board, a "what's
new" page, "featured links", and an up-to-the-minute
news feature.
The designer used Dreamweaver
to create most of the pages, along with some hand coding to make small
adjustments. The site is hosted at the free ISP Freeola.com
whilst the search facility is hosted remotely by FreeFind.com
and many of the Javascript and DHTML features come from Dynamic
Drive.
The future for the Helmdon web site looks bright, and having been
featured on the WEA
and VIllage Key
web sites as an example of what can be achieved by a rural community,
our visitor numbers continue to grow!
