Snow In Helmdon - 2009

Heavy snow fell in Helmdon on Thursday 5th and Friday 6th February 2009. The roads were impassable to ordinary traffic and the primary school was closed.

Earlier snow on Monday had simply been a warning for what was to come. Up to 10 cms fell on Wednesday night/Thursday morning and Helmdon residents woke up on Thursday to a winter wonderland. The school's headteacher took the decision to close the school at 8:00 a.m.

Only a few intrepid workers ventured out, with most taking a day off or working from home. On Thursday morning the village was a hive of activity with children (of all ages!) heading off to the viaduct for tobogganing and snowmen popping up everywhere.

On Friday the roads were better first thing and many people headed back to work, but over 5 cms of snoww fell between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. meaning that the village was once again cut off.
