What makes the English laugh? Tutor John Florance
Humour is a very personal thing but we often hear about something
called 'English humour'. What is this? The course will look at farce,
parody, nonsense, satire, innuendo and other things that the English
have found funny down the ages. Literary excerpts, film and television

English 18th century furniture Tutor Judith Hodgkinson
In the later 17th century furniture design was heavily influenced by the
Dutch and French courts. Gradually it became more distinctively English
– while still keeping an eye on French taste. Under designers such as
Chippendale, Mayhew and Ince and Adam, it reached a high point
between 1750 and 1780, before a slow decline as ready-made furniture
became more widely available. Fee includes £2 admission to Croome
Exhibition at Kelmarsh Hall; admission to the gardens is an optional

Making the most of your garden in summer

Find out what to do in the garden in summer on this practical, hands-on
course. Suitable for gardeners of any or no experience. Topics will
include summer pruning, plant identifications, taking cuttings, sowing for
succession for flowers and veg for the autumn and next year. Also
identifying which insects are pests and which are the goodies and the
care of houseplants, especially how to keep them alive when going
away! Tools will be provided. Bring secateurs if you have them. Wear
sensible shoes and dress for the weather! Please bring a packed lunch

Tai Chi Yang form: how and why? Tutor: David Lear
Designed for those wishing to improve the Yang Forms and
concentrating on details of structure and refinement to existing
movements, this course will give those practising the old style of Yang
form an opportunity through questions and answers to develop an
understanding of the differences practised between that and current
mainstream form. Short breaks may be taken and practice interspersed
with Chi Kung exercises specific to Tai Chi.

Modern China Tutor: Michael Lynch
China, only a few decades ago a crushed and broken nation, now bids
to become the greatest power of the twenty-first century. To explain this
remarkable transformation is the purpose of the course. Beginning with
an analysis of China’s historical character, the sessions will concentrate
on the twentieth century, describing the various stages China went
through on its journey from subjection to world dominance. Fee

Discover how to use and understand geological maps on this maps
masterclass. We will examine map features; the Geological Timescale,
igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock types, solid and drift, folds
and faults, cross sections and the effect of topography. On day 2, in
southern Derbyshire, we aim to get the most out of geological
excursions and walking in the countryside integrating a topographic and
geological map. No previous experience is necessary. Fee includes a
