Textile jewellery and corsages Tutor: Ruth Singer

Learn to make a whole range of fabric flower brooches using vintage or

recycled materials in contemporary and traditional styles. On day two try

some new techniques to create fabric necklaces, bracelets and hair

decorations using exciting contemporary designs. Fee includes £12 for

What makes the English laugh? Tutor John Florance

Humour is a very personal thing but we often hear about something

called 'English humour'. What is this? The course will look at farce,

parody, nonsense, satire, innuendo and other things that the English

have found funny down the ages. Literary excerpts, film and television

programmes will all be examined. Please bring a packed lunch if

required.

English 18th century furniture Tutor Judith Hodgkinson

In the later 17th century furniture design was heavily influenced by the

Dutch and French courts. Gradually it became more distinctively English

– while still keeping an eye on French taste. Under designers such as

Chippendale, Mayhew and Ince and Adam, it reached a high point

between 1750 and 1780, before a slow decline as ready-made furniture

became more widely available. Fee includes £2 admission to Croome

Exhibition at Kelmarsh Hall; admission to the gardens is an optional

extra payable on the day. Please bring a packed lunch if required on the

college based days.

Making the most of your garden in summer

Tutor: Sally Cunningham

Find out what to do in the garden in summer on this practical, hands-on

course. Suitable for gardeners of any or no experience. Topics will

include summer pruning, plant identifications, taking cuttings, sowing for

succession for flowers and veg for the autumn and next year. Also

identifying which insects are pests and which are the goodies and the

care of houseplants, especially how to keep them alive when going

away! Tools will be provided. Bring secateurs if you have them. Wear

sensible shoes and dress for the weather! Please bring a packed lunch

if required

Tai Chi Yang form: how and why? Tutor: David Lear

Designed for those wishing to improve the Yang Forms and

concentrating on details of structure and refinement to existing

movements, this course will give those practising the old style of Yang

form an opportunity through questions and answers to develop an

understanding of the differences practised between that and current

mainstream form. Short breaks may be taken and practice interspersed

with Chi Kung exercises specific to Tai Chi.

Edwardian Leicester Tutor: Cynthia Brown

The Edwardian period was an eventful time in Leicester, embracing the

election of Ramsay MacDonald as one of its MPs, protests against

unemployment, plans for a garden city at Humberstone, and a grand

Homecoming for Leicester exiles from across the world. We will explore

the significance of these and other events, and what they tell us in turn

about Britain during this period. Please bring a packed lunch if required.

Eco Knitting Tutor: Ruth Singer

A relaxed and informal course for new and complete beginner knitters.

Learn the basics and explore new techniques if you can already knit

and practise with on-hand help. Try out some interesting contemporary

knitted jewellery designs and experiment with organic and eco yarns to

make your knitting more sustainable. Fee includes cost of materials of

Modern China Tutor: Michael Lynch

China, only a few decades ago a crushed and broken nation, now bids

to become the greatest power of the twenty-first century. To explain this

remarkable transformation is the purpose of the course. Beginning with

an analysis of China’s historical character, the sessions will concentrate

on the twentieth century, describing the various stages China went

through on its journey from subjection to world dominance. Fee

includes sandwich lunch each day.

Geological maps Tutor: Carys Bennett

Discover how to use and understand geological maps on this maps

masterclass. We will examine map features; the Geological Timescale,

igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock types, solid and drift, folds

and faults, cross sections and the effect of topography. On day 2, in

southern Derbyshire, we aim to get the most out of geological

excursions and walking in the countryside integrating a topographic and

geological map. No previous experience is necessary. Fee includes a

sandwich lunch on Friday. Please bring a packed lunch for Saturday.
