"I didn't know Revd. Eddie Palmer of Syresham had died until a week
after his funeral."
This was a comment from a lady only temporarily house-bound which
made me realise that there are many Helmdon residents who are more
profoundly limited in their access to local information and events
than we are prepared to admit. "Why couldn't the information be put
on the Village's web-site?" Near to each one of us there live people
who are not in the community. Some choose not to be, despite our Village
of the Year success for community activities and organisations.
They are happy to go out to work, maintain that they have no free
time and selfishly perhaps follow their own life-style path.
But, dear computer user, you have people living close to you who have
no access this whiz-tech, immediate communication. You accept that
these pages of information are here more or less for "free". Again,
there are those people who choose not to have a computer (or even
a television) and yet they are very involved in the community - they
go out of their house. Of course, there are the house-bound or those
on low income who have other priorities than computers and the time
spent on the Internet.
Perhaps those who do have this Information Highway should be
giving rather than taking. Could you give some of your computer
time to contribute to these electronic village pages or do you only
down-load information from the web and take? Could you give
some of your time by disconnecting the line and switching off your
computer to call on that single or house-bound or elderly person near
to you? Just a thought. . . . . for the web!
Wot! You don't know anybody near you like that? Leave an e-mail with
the Webmaster
and we'll get back to you. (I wonder if anyone will bother?)
