On behalf of the Helmdon Parochial Church Council, we have great pleasure
in welcoming the Reverend William Adams as our new incumbent as from
15th May 2005, the date of his Institution and Induction as Rector
of the Astwell Benefice.
Will is eager to get to know folk and thought you may like to know
a little about him by way of introduction.
He and has family moved to Whitfield in January 1982 on being appointed
Deputy Head at Roade School, a secondary comprehensive school of 1600
students just south of Northampton. He later was appointed Headteacher
at Roade, a position he held for many years before seeking early retirement
in December 2004.
Will was ordained as a deacon in 2000 and priested in 2001 in Peterborough
Cathedral having studied with the East Anglian Ministry Training Course
based in Cambridge.
Will is married to Linda who is also a teacher and has taught for
many years at Brackley Junior Church of England School. They have
two children. James (Jim) (29) is a Data Analyst who works in London
and Kate (27) is a doctor working at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Will's interests have been motorcycling and church bell ringing both
of which he hopes to be able possibly to rekindle, albeit a little,
in the future. He is also very proud of his Devonian roots having
traced his rural lineage back to the late 17th century. Both he and
Linda are also very fond of Scotland and in particular the Outer Hebrides
and the west coast, regularly taking their holidays there.
Will and Linda will continue to live in their own home which will
also become the Astwell Benefice Office. If you want to get hold of
him he is available at:
The Astwell Benefice Office, Brookdale, Mill Road, Whitfield, Brackley.
NN13 5TQ
Telephone: 01280 850683, e-mail.
We look forward to his ministry amongst us and know he and his family
will be made to feel very welcome.

FRIENDS OF ST MARY MAGDALENE
The Friends have organised several events for the summer, as usual
designed for enjoyment at the same time as raising funds for the continuing
upkeep of the church. Although we have built up a good reserve of
funds we need to make sure that we can maintain this for future years.
The imminent "Quinquennial" surveyors report will no doubt
require more repairs, which will deplete, if not eliminate, these
reserves.
We are pleased to welcome back Fiori Musicali to the church on Friday
June loth at 7:30. This time the programme will comprise "elegant,
witty quartets in the French style" written in the mid 18th century
and featuring flute, violin, cello and harpsichord. Fiori Musicali
concerts have always been exceptional events with a full church, and
this should be no exception. Tickets are £lo and are available
from members of the Friends Committee, or by phoning 760523, 760477
or 760267.
Sunday June 26th will be Helmdon Open Gardens day, with teas available
along the way. A family Garden Party is planned for August - keep
your eyes on the village notice boards for more information.
Finally a note for your diary - on Saturday September 17th we have
been fortunate to book a famed Gospel Choir from Wood Green Church
in London. This is a new departure for Helmdon and should not be missed.

TUESDAY LUNCHES
When Lyndsey Glassett stopped her Lunch Club there was a great sense
of loss - and perhaps a belated recognition of the load she carried
for the village in planning, shopping and cooking single-handed every
month for several years, as well as raising the money to buy equipment.
In the spring of last year the churches Helping Hands circulation
enquired for helpers. Naturally no heroine (nor hero) stepped forward
to do all Lyndsey had done. But several people did offer assistance,
then and afterwards. I called these together to see what could be
achieved. That meeting produced a team to do the
lunches again, and the first six months' menus. We started in October,
as soon as there was a course at which Audrey Beattie could get the
hygiene certificate one of us must have. We have done six months,
numbers are growing, and we are covering the costs.
We are a happy team, composed of older women and women young enough
to have children still at Helmdon school, and even two at work who
shop and cook beforehand. There are enough for no one to have to help
every time. Lyndsey's lunch-time helpers, and Lucy Gadd, come to help
us in the same way.
We are providing an enjoyable occasion in the Reading Room every month
on third Tuesdays, for older people, especially those who can't easily
make themselves such good meals or who too often eat alone. We have
no lower age limit, however. The PCC is responsible, so we don't have
to register a club, but can clearly say we are open to whoever wants
to come whenever they want to come.
The menu for the next lunch is posted on the notice-board inside the
Reading Room for you to tick your choice between the two main dishes
and puddings offered. If you can't get to the Reading Room when it
is open (e.g. for Post Office sessions), just ring me. The list stays
up until I have to let cooks know how many helpings they need to make.
Lunch costs £3.50.
