Disappointing attendance at the
Annual Parish Meeting 2004
|
Helmdon's Annual Parish Meeting was held on Wednesday 28th April at
7:30 p.m. in the Reading Room.
Only 2 members of the public attended, a disaster compared to recent
years.
Last year the Reading Room was packed with over 40 members of the
public who were treated to a full and interesting agenda, including
reports from village groups and organisations, district and county
councillors and the police.
Neither the district councillor or county councillor were able to
attend this year, and the police sent a written report via Neighbourhood
Watch co-ordinator, Councillor Brookhouse.
The purpose of an Annual Parish Meeting is for the council to report
to its electorate on what it has accomplished in the last year. Members
of the public are permitted to ask questions and to make statements
on relevant matters during the meeting. Although the meeting is chaired
by the chair of the parish council it is not a business meeting and
the parish council do not make decisions. It is a forum for the electorate,
and an opportunity for members of the public to talk to councillors
about anything of interest or concern.
The reasons for the low turn out will no doubt be discussed at the
next meeting of the parish council on Wednesday May 26th at 7:30 p.m.
in the Reading Room. Members of the public are also invited to attend
this meeting.
