April 27th 2005
Residents had a chance to look at village photographs.

The Annual Parish Meeting for Helmdon was held on Wednesday 27th April
2005 at 7:30 p.m. in the Reading Room.
After the debacle of 2004 this meeting saw a return to the format
used in 2001 - 2003 and more than 40 residents were in attendance.
The meeting is for the electorate of the parish to listen to presentations
and raise points about things that affect them and their homes.
A full agenda included presentations from Peter Burns (chair of Helmdon
Parish Council) and Robin Digby (District Councillor).
Ms. Vanessa Pye, Environmental Services Manager at SNC, took up an
invitation to come and talk about the new Twin Bin recycling scheme
and she informed residents about the amount of waste collected in
the first week. The estimates for Helmdon were that 9.5 tonnes of
green waste, 1 tonne of glass and 1 tonne of paper had been collected.
This material will be recycled instead of going in to land fill sites.
The new scheme will help the district council meet, and indeed exceed,
their targets for recycling as set by the government.
The meeting also heard five minute presentations from no less than
twenty village groups and organisations. It was a great opportunity
for residents to catch up with what is going on in the village and
hear about what the groups have planned for the coming year. Many
people are involved in one or two groups but it is good to get an
overview of all the other activities that are available in the parish.
There was an opportunity to chat over a coffee and biscuit.
|
One notable absence was that of the police. Two members of the constabulary
had been invited but neither turned up and no written report was received.
As well as the meeting itself, the audience were treated to light
refreshments and a display of village photographs. There was a lively
ambiance after the meeting with many people staying behind to ask
questions and have a chat.
The issue that caused most discussion was the continuing poor state
of the parish's roads. There were questions as to why several other
villages in the area have had their roads completely resurfaced whilst
Helmdon has only had the odd patch here and there. Peter Burns said
that the parish council frequently write to the county council but
the letters fall on deaf ears. One imaginative parishioner suggested
that if Helmdon were to put itself forward to have a traveller's camp
then there would be no shortage of people going round offering to
do tarmac resurfacing!
Hopefully next year's meeting (26th April 2006) can build on the success
of this year.
