The Annual Parish Meeting for Helmdon was held on Wednesday 26th April
2006 at 7:30 p.m. in the Reading Room.
The meeting followed last year's successful format and around forty
members of the public were in attendance.
After welcoming everyone to the meeting Peter Burns, chair of Helmdon
Parish Council gave a brief annual report and then introduced Danny
Moody who gave a financial overview of the Council's activities for
the year.
Cllr Andrew Grant.

The first guest speaker was Cllr Andrew Grant, Helmdon's county councillor,
who updated everyone on what was happening at county level. The priorities
for rural areas were highway maintenance and public transport.
As the village was in the middle of a major overhaul of roads and
pavements at the time of the Annual Parish Meeting it made sense that
the key speech was from NCC's highways partner, Atkins. Tony McFadden
is Atkin's Head of Construction Services and he gave a very illuminating
presentation on the work of the Highways Agency in the county. Mr
McFadden then fielded questions and comments from residents about
the current works in the village.
During "Open Forum" all those present had the opportunity
to raise any matter they wished. One resident asked whether the Parish
Council had adopted any planning guidance, and whether it might be
possible to carry out a Village Design Statement. David Brookhouse,
chair of the Council's planning committee said that the Council was
only a statutory consultee and that SNC made the planning decisions.
He agreed to put the matter on the agenda for the next parish council
meeting.

A healthy turnout for the APM 2006.

Presentations from village groups and organisations formed the next
part of the meeting and twelve five-minute reports were heard. It
was great to hear about the incredible range of events and activities
there are in Helmdon, which provide for virtually every age group
and interest.
The chair closed the meeting at 9:50 p.m. and invited everyone to
stay for refreshments and to view a display of village photographs.
Next year's meeting will be held on 25th April 2007, so put the date
in your diary now!
