The Community Safety Roadshow
pulls up outside the Reading Room. |
There was great excitement in Helmdon on Thursday 22nd May 2003 as
the police Community Safety Roadshow rolled in to the village.
The initiative, by Northants Police Western Area, aims to bring policing
to rural communities. Chief Inspector Ray Campbell, Operations Manager
of Western Area Police, said that the aim of the roadshow was to make
Police more visible in the rural area and to improve their accessibility
to local communities.
The police used a specially adapted vehicle to act as a mobile display
and all villagers were invited to go along and have a look. The local
Community Beat Officer (PC Alan Tinker), a Crime Prevention Officer,
a Community Watch Liaison Officer, the area Public Relations Officer
and a Police Community Support Officer were in attendance and were
on hand to give specialist advice on areas of concern.
Available on the day were:
· Crime prevention advice and leaflets
· Security marking for property
· Marking of mobile phones
· Displays and information
School children were able to pick up information and talk
to local officers.

Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator and Parish Council vice-chairman
Mr. David Brookhouse, who arranged the visit, said "We have an
active Neighbourhood Watch scheme going in the village and this roadshow
helps local residents to see what is being done to reduce crime and
improve safety in the local area". "Helmdon is a very safe
place to live, and we'd like to keep it that way".
The roadshow visited over 30 villages in the Western Area during April
and May and is part of a wider programme to give community policing
a higher profile.
