Community spirit triumphed at the 20th annual Helmdon carnival weekend.

Some 2,500-3,000 people enjoyed live music and a traditional carnival parade over the bank holiday weekend from Saturday, August 24 to Monday, August 26. The event, which raises money for charities such as the Brackley Cottage Hospital, raised £5,000 this year.

Committee member, Peter Burns, said: "It went exceptionally well.

"Talking to people in the village everyone was thrilled it went so well."

The carnival fever kicked off with a bang on Saturday with Ackrington Stanley belting out the tunes. The Chippies were also there to get the evening swinging while 300 people danced the night away.

On Sunday lunchtime the stage was set for The Porterhouse Blues. The sun came out and around 100 pairs of feet were tapping to their tunes.

The carnival [parade] on the Monday, lead by the Banbury Air Training Corps Band, was another success with seven floats and lots of side attractions.

The winning float entry, Britannia, was created by Gary Turner and Paul Whitehouse of Cross Lane.

One of the highlights of the day was a breathtaking aeroplane aerobatics display.

Mr Burns said: "The carnival on the day was really good.

"Everybody was very thrilled. It is a big project but it is a good committee and it made it worth while."

Mr Burns said the success of Helmdon's carnival weekend is the community spirit.

He said: "There is such a good community spirit in Helmdon. Some people came to the jazz, some to the rock'n'roll. You try to cater for as many tates as you can."
