'THANK YOU' MISS
NICHOLS
All too often the work of the many dedicated volunteers
who give up their spare time - and more - to help our elderly
people, goes unmarked, but on Friday, Miss Nora Nichols, of
16 Wappenham Road, Helmdon, was the recipient of a rare honour
as a thank you for her work for the elderly and retired.
In Helmdon's Reading Room, watched by her friends and members
of the Helmdon Fellowship of Retired People of which she is
secretary, Miss Nichols received a Certificate of Appreciation
from Northamptonshire Age Concern.
The presentation was made by Mr John Christian, organising secretary
for the Northamptonshire Age Concern, who apologised for the
absence of his president, Earl Spencer, but who also pointed
out that the certificate had been signed by Earl Spencer himself.
Mr Christian recalled that in 1976, Northamptonshire Age Concern
celebrated its 25th anniversary, and it was thought at the time
that some method of recognising the devoted work of people such
as Miss Nichols, who had also given 25 years service to the
retired and elderly of their community, should be instituted.
Hence the certificate.
Mr Christian added that only 42 such Certificates of Appreciation
had been presented in the period since 1976, and so Miss Nichols
was among a select band of people.
"Twenty five years of such devoted and invaluable work
which has involved visiting the sick and frail, carrying out
tasks such as shopping, helping at a social club for the retied,
and generally looking after their well-being is an achievement
Northamptonshire Age Concern is pleased to mark," Mr Christian
told the Advertiser.
