Carnival Cash Handed Out

A whole host of charities, community and voluntary groups have been given cash which was raised at this year's Helmdon Carnival.

The popular annual event held over the August Bank Holiday weekend attracted hundreds of people to the village and raised around £3,000.

Organisers confirmed that Brackley Cottage Hospital, Helmdon Sports Club, Helmdon Reading Room and Helmdon Fellowship are among the groups who have benefited from the success of the village's 19th carnival.

The three day event - based under the theme A Space Oddity - has generated even more interest than usual.

Simon Oakley chairman of the carnival committee, confirmed that extra volunteers had come forward to lend a helping hand next time around

He told the Post: "We've got quite a large committee and we've got more interest generated."

Although plans have yet to get underway for the event in 2002, heads are already being scratched to come up with a theme.

A number of possibilities are currently being considered and Her Majesty the Queen's Golden Jubilee is one of the front runners.

Mr Oakley added: "Next year's theme is likely to be the Jubilee because it is the Queen's Jubilee."

Plans for next year's carnival are expected to get underway in January.
