Villagers launch web site

The village of Helmdon has joined the internet revolution by launching its own web site.

The idea for a village page in the world wide web was first mooted at a village meeting 18 months ago and is now on line.

The site - www.helmdon.f2s.com - features a wide range of topics and historical information about the village.

It also features parish council minutes and agendas, links to local businesses and photographs of the village taken using a digital camera purchased using a lottery grant.

The site was developed by parish councillors Terry Glassett and Renhart Gittens and Audrey Harwood of the Helmdon branch of the Workers' Educational Association.

Mr Gittens (later joined by Danny Moody of the WEA) provided the technical expertise and members of the WEA provided the historical details.

Mrs Harwood said "The aim o f the web site is two-fold.

"Firstly it is a source of local history intended to reach local school children and a greater in-depth historical knowledge for those wishing to dig deeper.

"Secondly the web site provides an events calendar which included details of village organisations.

It is hoped that the site will be informative, helpful and provide additional publicity for village events."
