There are forty five footpaths and five bridleways
in the parish that add up to some 31,000 metres of walking for the
enthusiasts!
The bridleway to Weedon was perhaps what in the early eighteenth-century
was called the Stockway, and Weedon children may have come that
way to Helmdon, over Scholars Plank.
Enclosure created the footpath north from the Jitty to Weston. Many
paths were shortcuts for men and women going out to work at Astwell
and Falcutt, or coming to the quarries.
Now the paths are used by very few on their way to work; they are
more commonly used for pleasure or for dog walking.
A Helmdon Parish
Paths group was formed in 2005 in response to the Helmdon
Parish Plan. The group is active in improving, enlarging and
promoting the parish paths network in Helmdon.
