Helmdon brook rises on high ground in the Stuchbury parish, it flows eastwards through the middle of Helmdon, bending north some distance past the village at Astwell Castle, where it finally joins the Tove. Many of the fields are drained by ditches feeding the brook, and it supplies many good watering places for cattle.
