Is This The End For Ckers? A Plea From The Heart - posted 25 April 2010

Dear Parents (and all those interested in saving an important Helmdon youth group)

Vicky, Richard and I are stepping down as CKERS Leaders, in July, after 3 years.

Unfortunately only 1 person has come forward following our plea to find new leaders.

Some of you have very kindly offered to help out at sessions but there really needs to be a main core of at least 3 people to organise the activities that run from September to July.

It may be that CKERS only hold sessions once a month rather than every other week. We have certainly found it difficult to do this due to so many other commitments.

It would be very sad if CKERS folds after July, especially as it has been going for over 11 years now.

If any of you are willing to help PLEASE contact me in the next few weeks.

Vicky, Richard and I have had such fun over the last 3 years, almost as much fun as your children! So don't see it as a chore, see it as a chance to make a difference while having a bit of a giggle!!

What will we do without 'Helmdon's Got Talent?

Your children will be makng a mess in YOUR kitchen instead of making pizza's at CKERS!

Who will take them rock climbing?

Are you ever going to walk through Whistley Woods at night again?

They'll get popcorn all over your lounge rather than at a CKERS Film Night!

OK, OK, I shall stop begging now and hope that someone comes forward...please!

Regards

Report from Spring Talkabout - posted 1 May 2010

The CKERS Youth Group is open for children/youths from Year 5 upwards.  We run under the umbrella of the church and meet on alternate Sunday evenings.  Currently we have over 25 members.

This year we have enjoyed a good variety of events including games nights (we have table tennis and air-hockey tables at the church), 10-pin bowling, a night hike, rounders, roller staking, a bike ride and BBQ.

Our big event in the summer was a trip to Aerial Extreme at Willen Lake to pit ourselves against the high wires courses.  The obstacles included rope swings, zip wires, swinging logs and tight ropes all between 4m and 14m above the ground.

We are grateful to both the Church and HYHO for their continued support for the group.

New members are always welcome; for more information please e-mail or give a call to Andrew Rimmer

Report from Autumn Talkabout - 5th November 2008

The CKERS youth group is for children in Year 5 and above and meets on alternate Sunday evenings in term time. The group is supported by the Church and we aim to include a variety of activities in our programme whether it is a game of rounders or a night hike in Wistley Wood.

This year we enjoyed food evenings - pizzas and pancakes (separate dates!), quiz and games nights and rounders/volleyball on the school field. Out and about we’ve been to the cinema, 10 pin bowling and our trip to Avon Dasset Country Park for kite flying was perfectly timed for the windiest evening in June. The annual night hike in Wistley Wood saw teams of 5/6 navigating to checkpoints around the wood and completing challenges at each one. Our final event before the summer break was a bike ride and BBQ; the older group went to Moreton Pinkney and back and the rest went to Weston.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank HYHOs for their generous support in funding games equipment and activities for the group.

We re-start on the 7th September with rounders and games on the school field then on the 21st September its ‘Helmdon’s got Talent’ at the Church.

Youth Group Going Strong - December 2003

Ckers is continuing to go from strength to strength with the youngsters enjoying various activities from quizzes to a Wizard's evening and Fireworks. There is also the opportunity for the older group to socialize in the Chapel. We are very grateful to the Carnival Committee who have generously presented us with £100. This will go towards funding our events and providing craft materials and games for us to use with the youngsters.

Waterworks Bring & Buy Sale
- 1st March 2003

Turning unwanted clothes and household items in to cash was the aim of the CKers youth club on Saturday 1st March as 15 members and helpers organised a Bring & Buy sale on behalf of the Blue Peter Waterworks Appeal.

After a busy afternoon in the Baptist Chapel the CKers had raised £290.15 for the charity.

Blue Peter says "The original target was £500,000! Enough money to pay for pumps and equipment to help 74 villages in Uganda and Tanzania and transform the lives of 30,000 people, giving them clean safe water for the rest of their lives."

Events like the CKers Bring & Buy sale helped Blue Peter not only reach their target but exceed it - the total raised so far stands at £1,078,554.

The CKers would like to thank everyone who supported them.
