Post Office And Drop-In Centre Up-date - posted 26 October 2010
New Weekly Cafe Comes To Helmdon in 2011
When the visiting Post Office ceases to come to Helmdon on a Tuesday morning and a Thursday afternoon at the end of November 2010 it looks – sadly – as if the Drop In Centre will close too. It may be that we are lucky enough to have a replacement Post Office official visiting Helmdon on a regular basis, but that is now in the hands of the Post Office themselves. The Drop In Centre has been a very popular venue for Post Office customers who like to sit down for a cup of tea and a chat: an essential part of the lives of some of our senior citizens. We would also like to provide a meeting place for some of our young mums; we aim to have a small children’s play area.
To make up for the loss of the Drop In Centre, the idea of a weekly cafe has been born. Following along the lines of the weekly cafe in Syresham (which is hugely popular), a few of us have become very enthused about this prospect.
We plan to hold a weekly cafe in The Reading Room, probably on a Wednesday morning, but this is not definite yet. The hall will be transformed for the morning into a contemporary cafe environment with nicely laid tables, table lamps, music etc. Customers will be able to buy ground coffee in individual cafetieres and pots of tea. For the sum of about £1 (again, not decided yet) you can enjoy a good brew and a slice of delicious homemade cake.
We already have about fifteen volunteers but will need about nine more so that people, working in couples, only have to supervise four sessions per year.
In order to let both potential customers and volunteers see what we are aiming for, we are holding a Great Coffee Morning on Tuesday 2nd November from 10.30 – 12.30. As the Post Office will be in session on this morning, it isn’t practical to have an open discussion about our plans but we will be distributing leaflets explaining what we’re up to and inviting comments and also recruiting possible volunteers. When we have the list of volunteers prepared, we will hold a small meeting to discuss all of the above.
So, please do join us on the 2nd November, enjoy a great cup of tea or coffee, and have your say in what this weekly cafe should be like. PLEASE COME!
