The Sun Shines on A Magnificent Summer Ball - posted 5 September 2010
Helmdon organises a Summer Ball on a grand scale. The main aim of the Ball is to a) have a great night out and b) and perhaps equally important, to raise as much money as possible for the village primary school and other village groups.
We are delighted to announce that subject to final accounting & verification, this year’s Ball raised an amazing £7,600!!
50% of the money raised will go directly to the school with the remaining 50% being split between other needy organisations and groups within Helmdon.
We were very lucky that the sun shone on the evening of 10 July 2010. There is no finer sight than to see 250 friends and neighbours walking through the village in their finery to support the biggest event in the Helmdon calendar.
The marquee stood proud on the school field, and at 7.30pm, the ladies, in their glamorous frocks and their gentlemen partners (all looking like James Bond!) arrived for a champagne reception, followed by a gastronomic delight in the form of a delicious three course dinner.
During the evening, the Grand auction raised £3,500 and the raffle raised over £1,000. As usual, we had some fantastic auction prizes, such as chalets in the Alps, cottages in the Highlands, Porsches for weekends etc, and we must thank all of our sponsors of the evening.
After dinner and the auction, the guests were then able to dance the night away to the awesome sound of ‘Jive Honey’ – A very impressive 10-piece live band.
With the bar and music providing the late night entertainment, the guests were able to drink, dance and enjoy themselves well into the early hours!
The last of the late night revellers staggered home from the Ball at around 01:00 in the morning with an overriding sense of what a fantastic night out in Helmdon we have all enjoyed.
We all very much look forward to the Summer Ball of 2012 when we hope to repeat it all over again, and maybe head towards the £10,000 profit mark, so get your gladrags and penguin suits cleaned and pressed ready for that one too!!
